As Yiddish researcher Miriam Borden explains, the Purim shpiel is a centuries-old tradition that makes up a rich part of the history of Jewish folk theatre, bringing together "parody, irony, social criticism, bawdy humour, and folklore." These "short comic plays" -- typically performed by non-professional actors -- are "a form of popular theatre that combines the elements of inversion and reversal that are intrinsically rooted in the holiday, with elements of carnival."
